Pregnancy Care

Pregnant woman with back pain

Pregnancy is a lot to bear

While we don’t practice obstetrics we do care for all of the joint and muscle aches associated with pregnancy.

Chiropractic adjustments for pregnant women are a safe and effective way to relieve the low back pain that about 50% of expecting mothers experience. We also offer pregnancy massages that can alleviate these aches and pains. Chiropractic and massage have a special place in the care of pregnant women because it isn’t safe to take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, Advil, Aleve, etc.

There is also emerging evidence that Tylenol (acetaminophen), which is commonly recommended during pregnancy, has an association with ADHD in children.

We use special equipment to provide a safe and comfortable experience as your pregnancy progresses. We can help keep you active exercising, working and doing all of the other things you need to get done. Pain shouldn’t get in your way while you are expecting and we can help.

There is some evidence that massage therapy during the final 12 weeks of pregnancy can help reduce prematurity, low birth weight, and postpartum depression. It is a safe, effective treatment option that also feels fantastic.

Questions?

Here are some important questions you may have when considering chiropractic care during pregnancy.

Is it safe to get an adjustment when I’m pregnant?

In general, chiropractic care has a supreme safety record. Serious complications are very rare and this includes treatment of expecting mothers. Chiropractic care is a safe and effective alternative to many cases of pregnancy related low back pain over even over-the-counter drugs that could have lasting side effects for mom and baby.

Are there any techniques that should be avoided while pregnant?

There certainly are some additional safety considerations while a woman is pregnant. Some physiotherapy modalities like electrostim and therapeutic ultrasound carry additional risks and should be avoided. Early in a pregnancy heat on the low back and abdomen should be avoided. If the pregnancy is high-risk in any way it will be important for the chiropractor to be in touch with the OB/GYN doctor so that they can work together to maximize safety for mom and baby.

Are there techniques that can help a woman go into labor?

Unfortunately there are no reliable chiropractic techniques to induce labor. Think about it this way… If there were, chiropractors would just spend all of their time treating expecting moms who are done being pregnant and they wouldn’t have any time to help anybody else! What we can do is help you and you baby to be as ready as possible for when the big moment does come.

Can chiropractic help if a baby is in the breech position?

If your baby is having trouble orienting to make a proper entrance into the world (head first), then there are some reliable techniques that can help a baby turn from this position. The breech position poses risks to babies and makes for hard deliveries for mothers. Often, these babies will be delivered by cesarean section for this reason. In the final weeks of pregnancy if a baby is in breech position a doctor may try manual techniques to turn the baby. This is very uncomfortable and distressing to the baby. Chiropractic offers a safe, comfortable and non-invasive treatment option.

Does pain during pregnancy pose any risks to my baby?

When you are in pain your body produces increased levels of adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones can pass through the placenta to a fetus. Cortisol is a stress hormone and excessive amounts can sometimes affect a baby. This is a good reason to keep stress and pain low during pregnancy. Massage therapy and chiropractic are great choices for both.

What People Say About Us.

I have found Dr. Young to be quite knowledgeable, helping me with my headaches and able to work and adjust me as I go through pregnancy. I know I will feel better anytime I see him for something that has come out of alignment and I know my baby will be in good hands when I start bringing my child to see him. He and the staff at Body of Health are friendly and welcoming and the office has a calming atmosphere.
